As part of the exhibition Mika Rottenberg, MAC invites you to meet the artists Juan Ortiz-Apuy and Didier Morelli, along with art historian Annie Gérin, who will each give a personal interpretation of Mika Rottenberg’s work.

En el marco de la exposición de Mika Rottenberg, el MAC le invita a una visita-encuentro con los artistas Juan Ortiz-Apuy y Didier Morelli, así como la historiadora del arte Annie Gérin, que ofrecerán cada uno una interpretación personal de la obra de Mika Rottenberg.

Juan Ortiz-Apuy is a Canadian-Costa Rican artist who has been living and working in Tiohtià:ke/Montreal since 2003. Ortiz-Apuy has a BFA from Concordia University (2008), a post-graduate diploma from the Glasgow School of Art (2009), and an MFA from NSCAD University (2011). His work has been exhibited across Canada and internationally in venues such as Les Abattoirs Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (France), IKEA Museum (Sweden), Pamflett (Norway), DHC/ART Fondation Phi pour l’art contemporain (Montréal), Owens Art Gallery (Sackville), Carleton University Art Gallery (Ottawa), AXENÉO7 (Gatineau), MOMENTA Biennale de l’image (Montréal), Manif d’art 7 (Québec), Truck Contemporary Art (Calgary), Museum London (London), Gallery 44 Centre for Contemporary Photography (Toronto), VOX Centre de l’image contemporaine (Montréal), and the MacLaren Arts Centre (Barrie). Ortiz-Apuy has received numerous grants from the Canada Council for the Arts and the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec, and his work has been reviewed in publications such as Canadian Art, MOMUS, Esse arts + opinions, The Gazette, Le Devoir, and Public Parking. He is an assistant professor in the Department of Studio Arts at Concordia University.
Annie Gérin is dean of the Faculty of Fine Arts at Concordia University. She holds a doctorate in art history and cultural studies from Leeds University and is interested in the social and political roles played by public art and material culture in contemporary and historical contexts, as well as in cultural practices of sustainable development. Her recent publications include the articles “Villes résilientes et Slow Art : pratiques spatiales et artistiques au temps de la COVID-19” (2021) and “Le destin des monuments : Réflexions sur la commémoration publique” (2019); the monographs Devastation and Laughter: Satire, Power and Culture in the Early Soviet State (2018) and Françoise Sullivan : Sa vie, son œuvre (2018), as well as several collections of essays, including Œuvres à la rue: pratiques et discours émergents en art public (2010), Formes urbaines: Circulation, stockage et transmission de l’expression culturelle à Montréal (2014), and Sketches from an Unquiet Country. Canadian Graphic Satire 1840–1940 (2018).
Didier Morelli is an artist, historian of art performance, critic, and exhibition curator who lives and works in Montréal. In both practice and theory, he is interested in the cultural and social intersections between visual art and performance. He holds a postdoctoral fellowship from the FRQSC (2022–24) in the Art History Department at Concordia University and earned a doctorate in performance studies from Northwestern University. In his dissertation, he examined the relationship between the built environment and the kinesthetic nature of performing bodies in New York and Los Angeles between 1970 and 1985. He recently became the assistant editor of the magazine Espace art actuel. He has contributed essays to the magazines Art Journal, Border Crossings, Ciel Variable, C Magazine, Esse arts + opinions, Frieze, Canadian Theatre Review, Peripheral Review, TDR: The Drama Review, and Vie des arts, among others. He is Bernard Lamarche’s research assistant for the retrospective on the photographer Evergon that will be held at the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec in October 2022. He has recently curated a group exhibition that explores the intersection between water sports and contemporary art, at the Stewart Hall Art Gallery (2022).
