Stéphane La Rue is committed to methodically investigating visual phenomena related to colour and light. Forms that are applied or drawn on the surface, with minimal intervention, appear ordered or cleverly dislocated, and occupy a close relationship to the pictorial plane. In La Rue’s work, the clarity of the material becomes a substitute for the purity of form as extolled by Modernism. The artist willingly bypasses artistic boundaries to sculpt, retrace and outline the frame’s edges.
