Artwork description
In the 1970s, Gabor Szilasi began photographing people, interiors, architecture and landscape in a manner that would set the stage for documentary photography in Québec. His series Portraits-intérieurs, produced from 1977 to 1979, attests to Szilasi’s fundamental preoccupation with capturing the relationship between humans and their environments. As part of this larger series, Andor Pasztor, Montréal juxtaposes two photographs, one in black and white, and one in colour. This approach, which consists of presenting both a portrait and an image of a personal interior space, sharpens our understanding of the portrayed individual’s personality and reveals cultural values as expressed through their environment. Each photograph provides information on the characteristics that define a way of life, while reciprocity between the two serves to unveil additional clues. Here, man’s portrait reflects the image of society, and conveys how the environment both describes and conditions the individual.
