- Artwork description
- ID consists of two distinct but related images that continue Lorna Simpson’s exploration of racial prejudice and stereotyping. Through a strategic presentation that defies the conventional norms of front-facing portraiture, the work offers a critique of prejudice through fragmentation and suggestion. The meaning behind an enigmatic close-up becomes clearer once the second image is viewed: the detail of tightly curled hair and the woman viewed from behind both demand an openness to the other through their differences.
