Artwork description
Olivia Boudreau’s immersive video installation, L’Étuve, offers a contemplative, durational experience that summons the viewer’s faculties of perception. Projected in a darkened room, the video depicts the enclosed space of a sauna, where several women’s bodies appear and disappear to the rhythm of the steam cycles that alternately densify and dissipate. The minimalist narrative creates a sense of expectation by accentuating the slowness of the sequence and the passivity of the women. The suspense, however, remains unresolved, as ultimately the air clears to reveal an empty room.
