Artwork description
Réminiscence, by Nicolas Baier, is a fully computer-generated image of an endless cloudscape created by powerful image processing software. The artist’s initial goal was to recreate an image of the sky over the metropolitan region of Montréal at the moment when life on Earth first began. The impossibility of this exercise led Baier on a series of calculations that reproduced the sky as it would have appeared more than 10,000 years ago. As the title indicates, the work “references a constructed state, a memory that has never been engraved in the human mind,” and explores how imagination, desire and idealization intervene in the formation of history and memory.
