Artwork description
Spas and interior pools are among Lynne Cohen’s preferred subjects. Presented as empty environments devoid of human presence, the artist reveals the strange, even austere nature of spaces that are dedicated to people’s well-being and to community life. Her photograph titled Spa depicts a deserted room of disquieting tranquility. The dissociation of this space from its daily, utilitarian context and expected narrative gives it an artificial, quasi abstract dimension, which Cohen reinforces through a careful framing that underlines the room’s architectural symmetry. Colour plays an important role here as well. The dominance of blue suggests an artificial representation of water’s “blueish” colour, which is in essence a reflection of the sky above.
