- Artwork description
- Roxy Paine’s sculpture Vertical Sequence 3 is part of his distinctive series titled Vitrines, consisting of hyper-realistic replicas of different plant and mushroom species in various states of decay, enclosed in display cases or glass cloches, much like they would be in a natural history museum. Paine is specifically interested in the hallucinatory and toxic properties of mushrooms, many of which have the power to alter our mental or physical states. Here, the artist’s imagery poetically reminds us of the fine line between life and death.
