Archives and Médiathèque

The Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal (the MAC)’s archives and the Médiathèque bring together one of the largest collections of documentary resources in Canada devoted to contemporary art. They provide privileged access to the history of the Museum as well as to Québec, Canadian and international art.

The document library contains more than 6,570 records for more than 8,300 works in the collection; 8,760 records of artist biographies; and 1,130 records of events related to the Museum’s programming since its foundation in 1964.

To this is added nearly 53,000 books and exhibition catalogues; 1,380 documentary videos about art; 810 periodical titles; as well as 620 artists’ books. In addition to its own institutional archives, the MAC is home to 16 private fonds, including the Paul-Émile Borduas, Gérard and Gisèle Lortie, Jean-Paul Mousseau and Yves Trudeau fonds.

The MACrépertoire offers online access to a massive range of resources related to works in the Museum’s collection, artists, exhibitions and publications. This constantly evolving research tool brings together extensive documentation, especially images, archival documents, and audio and video recordings.

A more comprehensive version of the MACrépertoire is also available for consultation on site, offering access to an even larger selection of resources.

Prepare for your visit

Resource materials can be consulted by appointment by artists, people working in artistic, cultural and heritage contexts, as well as graduate students. Appointments are offered based on staff availability and the accessibility of the requested documents.
