Artwork description
Created during a pivotal moment in Jack Bush’s artistic career, Split Circle No. 2 is comprised of two, slightly off-set semi-circular forms that float against an off-white background. Although the figure/ground relationship produced here maintains the illusion of space, the slight imbalance of the semi-circles, accentuated by their subtly irregular outline and by the deep impregnation of the pigment into the canvas, creates a spatial ambiguity that the artist continued to explore in various ways in subsequent works.
