- Artwork description
- Produced for La Biennale de Montréal 2014, Ryan Gander’s in situ installation, Tomorrow’s Achievements, consists of four large curtains of various widths hung from motorized ceiling rails in a gallery at the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal. White on one side, black on the other, the curtains move autonomously around the room’s periphery, two travelling clockwise, the other two counter-clockwise, before pausing at various points to fully or partially obscure the work of other artists on the walls, sometimes even blocking the room’s doorways. Imbued with the artist’s typical brand of humour, the work immediately raises an ethical question: what issues arise when an artwork is produced with the ultimate goal of obscuring the work of others, especially in the context of a biennale?
