Julie Couture, Chair of the Board, Fondation du MAC and Board Member, Sanimax The new MAC will be a transformative museum, with dynamic and welcoming spaces designed to highlight contemporary art, whether by Quebec, Canadian, or international artists.
For André, Martin, and me, philanthropy is at the heart of our commitment to the community. Each of us expresses our individuality through the causes we care most about, but it’s in supporting one another that we find our strength. Together, we stand by each other in our commitments, driven by a sincere desire to contribute—each in our own way—to a more engaged and responsible society.
My interest in art is innate. My first artistic inspirations were shaped by figures like Giacometti and Henry Moore. Later, it was at the MAC that I discovered artists who left a lasting impression on me and continue to broaden my perspective: artists like Ragnar Kjartansson, Nicolas Baier, Caroline Monnet, Rafael Lozano-Hemmer, Patrick Bernatchez, Geneviève Cadieux, among others.
Today, I continue to make discoveries primarily through museum exhibitions and initiatives led in collaboration with the Foundation, which spotlight artists through fairs, galleries, and visits to their studios. Although the MAC has always offered remarkable exhibitions, the former building didn’t always do justice to the richness of the works on display. I dreamed of a true “MoMA” for Montréal; a space where artists, who play a vital role in challenging and expanding our worldview, could shine and share their ideas and emotions.
The new MAC will be a transformative museum, with dynamic and welcoming spaces designed to highlight contemporary art, whether by Quebec, Canadian, or international artists. It will become a true place of exchange and dialogue.
Montréal will be able to position itself as a North American capital of contemporary art. This cultural visibility will help diversify the city’s tourism offerings, while generating economic benefits for local businesses. As it becomes more rooted in the city, the MAC will be able to forge strong partnerships with boroughs, universities, festivals, businesses, and community organizations, deepening its cultural mission while securing its long-term future.
Contemporary art is always evolving—and that’s what makes it special.
Viviane Croux, Senior Vice-President and Head of Quebec, BMO Enterprises We believe that art has the power to transform communities, spark dialogue, and broaden perspectives—values we actively support.
BMO chose to support the MAC’s transformation because it’s a forward-looking project aimed at enhancing the accessibility, visibility, and impact of contemporary art in Montreal. This support reflects our commitment to fostering innovative cultural institutions that play a key role in urban vitality and social dynamism.
We believe that art has the power to transform communities, spark dialogue, and broaden perspectives—values we actively support. Our involvement reflects our mission to help build a more inclusive future by investing in institutions that promote equity, representation, and cultural innovation. Supporting the MAC underscores our belief that access to culture is a cornerstone of a just and prosperous society.
Contemporary art offers a unique reflection of our times, tackling pressing social, political, and environmental issues. It amplifies marginalized voices and explores diverse narratives. We see it as a powerful tool for building a more inclusive society—one in which everyone can see themselves, ask questions, and express their views.
By supporting a museum dedicated to this form of art, BMO seeks to foster a dynamic, evolving cultural landscape—one that encourages critical thinking and embraces a diversity of perspectives. A museum like the MAC can be a catalyst for social dialogue and a hub for intercultural exchange. It can also help elevate Montreal’s global profile while offering a space for meaningful connection between citizens, artists, and local communities.
The MAC’s transformation is a major milestone for Montreal. It reaffirms the city’s status as an international cultural hub. It’s also an opportunity to enrich Montreal’s artistic scene and create an open space where people can reflect, create, and engage. The MAC should embody openness, relevance, innovation, and accessibility. It must be a vibrant, socially engaged institution—connected to community realities and capable of representing the full range of contemporary voices and experiences.
BMO hopes this partnership will help expand cultural access, encourage civic participation, and contribute to Montreal’s economic and tourism development. Over the long term, our goal is to strengthen the social fabric through art and creativity.
Carole Gagnon et Michel Ringuet, major donors Located in the heart of the Quartier des Spectacles, the new MAC will attract thousands of visitors. We’ll be there to explore the exhibitions and the permanent collection, but also to admire the architecture of the new building.
Our journey as collectors began quite simply. At first, we bought artworks as "decoration", based on colors, size, image, and price.
Then one day, we met people who were passionate about contemporary art. We joined them on a trip to Miami Art Basel, and that’s when we fell in love. It was a whole new world: paintings, photographs, sculptures, video art, everything was fascinating. That’s when we bought what we now consider our first real artwork. Since then, our collection has grown, thanks in part to Montreal’s art galleries.
Supporting the MAC came naturally, out of a genuine interest in contemporary art. We’ve always enjoyed visiting the museum and have wonderful memories of past exhibitions.
We firmly believe that museums play a very important role: they support artists, gallery owners, and make art accessible. When we travel, one of our greatest pleasures is visiting galleries and museums. These spaces fuel our curiosity and imagination. That’s why supporting the MAC’s transformation is important to us. It’s a way to stand in solidarity with those who are leading this inspiring project.

At home, contemporary art is a true source of joy. We love being surrounded by works we’ve carefully chosen. Some, created by socially engaged artists, confront us with difficult realities. What moves us most are the unexpected moments of connection: a plumber, an electrician, a guest who stops in front of a piece and asks a question. Contemporary art has that unique power—to spark dialogue in the most unexpected places.
RBC Foundation The arts are good for our spirit and our well-being, and it should have no barriers.
From the days of RBC’s first community investment in 1891, we have had a long history of partnering with our communities to help solve important issues that are relevant to society.
It’s core to our Purpose of helping clients thrive and communities prosper. That’s because we know the success of our business is deeply connected with the wellbeing of the people and world in which we live, work and operate, and that we have a responsibility to play a part in building a stronger future. Through the RBC Foundation Community Infrastructure Fund, we are pleased to support the MAC project as they seek to improve the physical accessibility of the museum.
As part of our commitment to creating more accessible and sustainable communities, the RBC Foundation Community Infrastructure Fund provides grants for renovations, repairs or improvements to existing community spaces and the construction of new spaces. In Canada, over half of our buildings are either not accessible or only partially accessible. Recognizing the lack of funding for bricks-and-mortar projects in the charitable sector, we saw an opportunity to bridge the gap.
The arts are good for our spirit and our well-being, and it should have no barriers. Regardless of visible or invisible disabilities, we want everyone to be able be able to fully experience the Museum.
This commitment aligns with the RBC Foundation's philanthropic strategy, and we are proud to embody a culture of belonging by removing and preventing barriers to accessibility to support inclusive participation.
