Launch of the fall season at the MAC

Montréal, August 17, 2011 — This year, the fall season will kick off with the second edition of The Québec Triennial, an eagerly awaited event that will give visitors a chance to take stock of Québec art today. The MAC is also presenting RealTime UnReal, an immersive, reactive work by the new-media collective Workspace Unlimited. The SéminArts program, organized in cooperation with the Claudine and Stephen Bronfman Family Foundation, will once again be on the schedule, with a series of five get-togethers devoted to contemporary art collecting. And the Friday Nocturnes start up again on Friday, September 2 with Little Scream and DJ The Small Is Beautiful. As always, admission to the Musée is free on Wednesdays from 5 to 9 p.m.

The Québec Triennial 2011. The Work Ahead of Us

The Québec Triennial is one of the largest and most highly anticipated art events in Montréal, Québec and Canada. For this second edition of The Triennial, the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal has put together a show of unprecedented scope that will extend beyond the museum’s exhibition galleries and spill over into its indoor public spaces as well as into the Espace culturel Georges-Émile-Lapalme at Place des Arts and on place des Festivals in the Quartier des spectacles. The exhibition will showcase works by some fifty young artists who are sure to leave their mark on the development of art in Québec. A performative component, featuring live performances and the Friday Nocturnes, will round out this edition of The Québec Triennial.

Projections Series

RealTime UnReal
August 31 to October 2, 2011

RealTime UnReal, the latest installation by new-media collective Workspace Unlimited, draws its inspiration from the sites where it is presented and offers “hybrid” spaces with multiple perspectives, in which real and virtual are intertwined in an ever changing flow. The resulting experience is both unique and surprising. The visitor first encounters a conventional rectangular screen on which the image of another, suspended screen is projected. As soon as a presence is detected, the projected image is activated, and then transformed by the visitors’ movements, through a network of detectors and computers. Made up of Kora Van den Bulcke and Thomas Soetens, Workspace Unlimited explores the relational field of “augmented” realities in a conceptual process that lies at the intersection of art and architecture.

In cooperation with the Claudine and Stephen Bronfman Family Foundation, the Musée is offering SéminArts, a series of five gatherings devoted to contemporary art collecting. At each session, participants will have the opportunity to meet different players in the art world: artists, collectors, dealers, curators, and more. The activity costs $175/series. Friday Nocturnes 2011

The Friday Nocturnes resume on Friday, September 2 with Little Scream, aka Laurel Sprengelmeyer, and DJ The Small Is Beautiful, aka Jamie Thompson. These events will continue on October 7, November 4 and December 2 as part of the Live component of The Québec Triennial 2011. The Nocturnes are unique Montréal evenings that turn up the ambience at the museum, with live musical performances, bar service and access to all the exhibition galleries. Admission with regular Musée ticket or our Wired card ($20, valid for one year).

Journées de la culture

For this year’s Journées de la culture, the MAC is offering a guided tour focusing on the links between art and architecture inside the Musée, outside the Musée… and on the roof of the Musée. Visitors will be able to see how the works interact and communicate, and how they fit into our environment. The tour will cover pieces by artists Christian Boltanski, Geneviève Cadieux and Pierre Granche, among others. Tours at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. An art workshop exploring the same theme is also on the program, at 1 p.m., 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. Free activity.
