Since the 1980s, Dominique Blain has worked to highlight and denounce political abuse, militarism and social conflict in a wide range of contexts. Taking found images, archival photographs and everyday objects, she imbues them with a meaning and an impact that has been lost or buried through their use by dominant cultural and political forces. This publication provides an opportunity to draw attention to the coherence and consistency of a sculptural practice which is notable as much for its plastic and symbolic force as for the universality of its subjects. An interview, an essay and several colour plates are accompanied by an original 10 page artist’s project. Dominique Blain divides her time between Montreal and Los Angeles. In the past few years she has had major exhibitions at Carnegie Mellon University, San Diego’s University Art Gallery, the Vancouver Art Gallery and the Sidney Biennial.
