Etienne Zack is an emerging painter trained in Vancouver and living in Montreal whose work explores the physical act of art making. Known for his extravagant palette, Zack’s work is characterized by staged sculpture-like scenes with references to historical paintings taken up in contemporary critical debates. Zack’s inquiries often take as their subject the very process of art’s production and exhibition and the entire range of physical and conceptual tools employed in its creation. The rigorous sequencing that marks his work, with repetition, multiplication and symmetry, is counter-balanced by the exuberant playfulness of his expressionist painterly style.

Zack was the 2005 winner of the RBC National Painting Competition.
