Tan’s video installation – Saint Sebastian – is distinctive for its highly controlled editing, its refined images and the sensitivity with which the artist tackles the question of the perception of cultural differences. Saint Sebastian focuses on the annual Toshiya ceremony in Kyoto. Tan shows us the women’s competition of this traditional archery competition which serves as a coming-of-age ritual. The images are breathtakingly beautiful&emdash;as Tan writes, “magic and beautiful, perhaps even too beautiful.” A native of Indonesia, Tan lives and works in Amsterdam.
