This luminous publication, illustrated with dozens of colour images, accompanies the world premier of a new film installation by British filmmaker Isaac Julien. Co-produced by the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal and the Centre Pompidou. True North tells the story of Matthew Henson, Robert Peary’s servant and the first black man to set foot on the North Pole. The Black Diaspora is central to Julien’s concerns. In an interview with Shaheen Merali he extends the concept into a discussion of transcultural experience and ways of looking at the philosophical ideas developing among African-Americans and how they influence European thoughts and vice versa. Also included are images from and discussions of two other film installations, Paradise Omeros and Baltimore, a tribute to American filmmaker Melvin Van Peebles.
