madeskimo and Jackson 2bears

Montréal, October 25, 2013 — In connection with the exhibition Beat Nation:  Art, Hip Hop and Aboriginal Culture, the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal is delighted to welcome madeskimo and Jackson 2bears for a unique and unconventional Friday Nocturne to be held next Friday, November 1, from 6 to 11 p.m. Also scheduled is a talk at 7 p.m., in French and English, with Mark Lanctôt, the curator in charge of the Montréal presentation of Beat Nation, and some of the artists featured in the show. As always, the public will have access to all the Musée’s exhibitions throughout the evening and bar service ($) will be offered. In addition, the evening’s first 300 visitors will have a chance to try out the silk-screen technique in a workshop led by the MASSIVart collective. Admission to the Nocturne is $12; free for MACarte card holders.

A number of artists in the exhibition Beat Nation, including madeskimo and Jackson 2bears, are also musicians. Iqaluit-born Geronimo Inutiq, or madeskimo, creates musical worlds with his remixes of traditional throat singing. On the Nocturne evening, he will be accompanied by throat singer Sylvia Cloutier. In the work of Jackson 2bears, it’s the drum¾a favourite First Nations instrument¾that resonates. This artist will give a multimedia performance on the Rotonde stage starting at 9 p.m.

Beat Nation represents a generation of artists who juxtapose urban culture with Aboriginal identity to create innovative and unexpected new works that reflect the realities of Aboriginal peoples today. Organized and circulated by the Vancouver Art Gallery and based on an initiative of grunt gallery, Vancouver, Beat Nation features painting, sculpture, installation, performance and video. The exhibition will run at the MAC until January 5, 2014.
